Kaupapa Māori Clinical Support Services

Kaupapa Māori Clinical Support Services (KMCSS) was established in 2009 to provide clinical support services to Māori mental health providers in the Bay of Plenty.

KMCSS is funded by the Bay of Plenty District Health Board (BOPDHB) and is a free service to those mental health providers holding kaupapa Māori clinical contracts with the BOPDHB.

What we do

In working with a number of Māori Mental Health Providers, KMCSS has initiated:



Clinical Processes
 

  • Initiate Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) Forums within participating Hauora
  • Support kaimahi how to assess, manage and review their cases effectively
  • Teach the use of the ‘Pounamu’ Model of Practice
  • Support kaimahi to identify levels of acuity and high risk
  • Enable kaimahi to integrate kaupapa and clinical into contractual expectations
  • Support kaimahi to participate ‘clinically’ in mainstream environments
  • Support kaimahi in meeting clinical best practice standards



Clinical Training
 
 

  • Ongoing facilitation of training forums since February 2010
  • Further specific training facilitated within MDT or Supervision sessions as required
  • Specific training provided for Hauora kaimahi of why and how to process their MDT hui, to ensure  accountable, reviewable client outcomes
  • Ethical Practice and Code of Conduct training and education



Cultural Support 

  • Support the use of Māori models of practice
  • Support use of Māori models of practice that can recognise clinical risk issues
  • Facilitate training forums that recognise the importance of Māori models
  • Acknowledge and support the Mana Motuhake of each individual Hauora



Supervision

  • Provision of Clinical Supervision by certificated clinical supervisors
  • Utilisation and transference of ‘Pounamu’ model as a supervisory tool
  • Teach and facilitate the use of relevant models of cultural / clinical supervision
  • Utilise Social Work and Nursing supervision models
  • Provide kaimahi with support for studies, clinical placement and registration



Mentoring

  • Modelling and supporting confident practice towards greater self reliance
  • Provision of support in case management and case coordination
  • Providing specific support eg. complex cases, attending mainstream MDT hui
  • Supporting the process of peer evaluation.
     


Workforce Development

  • Facilitate and provide forums for professional development
  • Support the development/ planning of career pathways for kaimahi
  • Provide DAPAANZ supervision and mentoring for kaimahi studying addiction and co existing disorders
  • Supporting and enhancing evidence based practice



Linkages

  • Developing ongoing linkages with the Mental Health Team BOPDHB
  • Developing ongoing linkages with NGO Providers
  • Developing ongoing processes to improve NGO Hauora interface – liaison and collaborative practice with Mainstream Providers
  • Streamlining pathways and processes for effective relationships
