Our Philosophy

Poutiri Trust exists so that whānau, hapū, and Iwi of the four waka - Te Arawa, Mātaatua, Takitimu and Tainui - achieve whānau ora.   Poutiri Trust has chosen Te Pae Mahutonga as the model to describe what whānau ora may look like in terms of whānau wellbeing.

Te Pae Mahutonga is a Māori health promotion model developed by Mason Durie in 1999.  It  emphasises six key principles / strategies relevant to the wellness of Māori – Mauriora, Waiora, Toiora, Te Oranga, Ngā Manukura and Te Mana Whakahaere.

Te Pae Mahutonga as a navigational guide to Poutiri Trust,  shows clearly that in order to be successful as hauora, we must deliver to contemporary Māori realities without losing focus on traditional ways of being, and our aspirations as Māori.  To be sustainable we must also assume greater autonomy and control in the delivery of hauora services to whānau.
